FS#212 - Control Palette: Reorganize?

I understand why there are four tabs, but I wonder if there is a better way of organizing them.

I find that I easily forget where to find a control: which tab is it on? and which icon is it? A few icons are clear as to what the control is, but some are not. I often have to wait for the telltale to show to be sure. This is not the fault of the picture on the icon: icons are only a limited number of pixels.

So Idea #1 is to add a main menu item called Controls, with all the controls as sub-items. In the future, it may be necessary to have 3 levels, with Native and UDFs as the second level.

Idea #2 is to group the controls alphabetically, e.g. A to E for the first tab, F to M for the second, etc.

This is the thing, that should be made at very early stage. This separation (Standard, Additional...) come from Delphi and absolutely irrelevant to WinAPI or Autoit.

Bit I would not change this now, until "Some Big Release", since it cause problem for those who already familiar with Koda :)

I also don't think that alphabetic is the good grouping factor here, since not so many controls.

But idea about adding "Controls" menu can be considered. It's also can be good for ones who love keyboard.

My view: the controls needed to be divided into four tabs, so there are enough of them to make logical grouping worth while. I have been unable to think of any grouping factor other than alphabetic that makes logical sense.

  • I have been doing some more thinking: a dangerous activity!

I can see the following grouping of controls:

  • Basic - Label, Input, Edit, Button, Checkbox, Radio
  • Menus - Menu, Context, Tray
  • Graphics - Pic, Icon, Graphic, Imagelist
  • Container - Group, ControlGroup, Tab
  • Lists (and Tree) - List, ListView, TreeView, Combo
  • Date - Date, MonthCal
  • Numeric - UpDown, Slider, Progress
  • Advanced - Avi, Dummy, Obj
  • Other - StatusBar, IPAddress, Toolbar

When I combine these into reasonable size tab pages, I get:

  • Basic
  • Menus, Containers
  • Lists (and Trees), Graphics
  • Numeric and Date
  • Advanced and Other

Just an idea

Maybe, at least for me this have little more sense then alphabetical... Though I would not mix custom and standard autoit controls, since they are handled differently.

Anyway, this is the deal of future.
